Unpacking the Syrian Imbroglio

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) hosted a webinar on the theme Unpacking the Syrian Imbroglio.
Over a two-week period, Syria experienced a series of dramatic events as opposition fighters from several groups captured one town after another in the culmination of the uprising that began in 2011. The rapidity of the rebel advance, the surrender of soldiers of the Syrian army and the diplomatic deals made even before Damascus was captured shocked observers. In 14 years, close to a million people were killed and about 12 million displaced in the Syrian civil war.
This webinar examined the background to the events over the past fortnight, looked at the events as they unfolded, and considered possible future scenarios for the Syrian people.
