Reflections on Women and Social Change in South Africa: MISTRA Collected Works

It’s the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 women’s march against the pass laws, and to mark this anniversary, the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) launched its latest book to mark this anniversary, Reflections on Women and Social Change in South Africa: MISTRA Collected Works, on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
The volume draws together contributions from MISTRA’s previous research and public lectures to offer a comprehensive examination of the factors shaping women’s lives in post-apartheid South Africa. Authors will be at the gathering to reflect on their contributions and on the barriers to inequality that remain or have been overcome.
The launch took place at a time when there is a pushback in some countries against rights won by women. There was a discussion about the durability of international policy frameworks, the intersectionality of women’s struggles, and how solidarity can be leveraged to address contemporary challenges affecting women and their right to gender equality everywhere.
