This chapter explores the relationship between energy and water in South Africa. Often in policy debates, the connection between water and energy is not well articulated, though evidence suggests a strong co-dependence between electricity production and coal and water, and how a shortage of water will affect electricity availability.
This working paper forms part of MISTRA’s priority research project, Earth, Wind and Fire: Unpacking the Political, Economic and Security Implications of the Discourse on the Green Economy, that examines issues ranging from global and domestic climate change and sustainable energy issues to the mineral-energy complex issues that have given rise to local and sector-specific problems.
