Nuclear Disarmament and its Relevance to Africa
29 July 2025
The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) hosted a high-level virtual dialogue exploring one of the most pressing global challenges of our time: nuclear disarmament, which has attained greater prominence in light of the recent Israeli Iranian conflict, and the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities by the USA.
Drawing on South Africa’s own history as the only country to have voluntarily dismantled its nuclear weapons programme, this webinar will examine the role that African countries can play in advancing a global disarmament agenda, the implications of emerging geopolitical dynamics, and the responsibilities of civil society in fostering nuclear awareness.
