Navigating Coalition Governance in South Africa and the Netherlands

18 February 2026

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance (UCT) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, hosted a high-level public seminar on the evolving landscape of coalition politics.

South Africa’s political landscape has reached a defining crossroads. Following the 2024 national elections, the establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has shifted the focus from absolute majorities to the complex art of collaborative governance and coalition arrangements.

The seminar bridged theory and practice, drawing on expert contributions, debate and dialogue to explore the opportunities and challenges of this new era.
