MISTRA Annual Report
2017/2018
In this reporting period, we have completed four priority research projects (PRPs) that contribute to 15 completed PRPs since inception. These cover research into African countries’ regional integration, South Africa’s basic education system, the state of mathematics pedagogy in the country as well as the nation’s ethics and value system.
The Board of Governors approved a long-term strategy, titled ‘From Consolidation to Growth and Deeper Impact’, which sets out a vision for the Institute’s long-term sustainability and
development. We also continue to offer well-researched and long-term strategic views on policy and intellectual debates.
In addition to other accomplishments featured in this report, I would like to highlight MISTRA’s ranking in the 2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index that rated the Institute number 50 out
of 664 think tanks in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, MISTRA is ranked number 37 in the Top Think Tanks with Annual Operating Budgets of Less Than 5 Million USD. These rankings are produced by the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
What has really enabled the Institute to progress is the culture of progressiveness and independence that it has instilled into public discourse. Above all, it is the continued support of our
donors and clients. As you read the report, I hope you will gain insight into the breadth and depth of our activities in our quest to deepen debate and broaden avenues of enquiry.
The accomplishments over the past year and the work ahead remain dependent on your support and contributions, as well as on our dedicated staff. It is now, more than ever, that South Africa needs thought leaders that share a common understanding of the global challenges and opportunities. I am immensely grateful to those individuals and partners whose contributions and support sustain us.
