Mapungubwe Annual Lecture 2024

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), in partnership with the University of Johannesburg, hosted the 12th Mapungubwe Annual Lecture.

The Annual Lecture occupies a prestigious place in the intellectual landscape of South Africa. It has attracted wide audiences, nationally, continentally, and globally since it was first launched in 2012.

This year’s lecture was delivered by South African lawyer, public speaker and author, Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC, under the theme is “Critiques of Constitutionalism 30 Years On.”

Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC

Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC is an advocate of the High Court and holds BProc, LLB (Unitra), LLM (Rhodes) and LLM (London School of Economics) degrees. He is also currently a member of the Judicial Service Commission and a part-time member of the Competition Commission’s Competition Tribunal.

An advocate of the Johannesburg Bar since August 2010, he gained silk status in February 2020 and has acted as a judge in the Labour Court, the Land Claims Court, and the High Court of South Africa.

His advocacy extends to diverse legal domains, including competition law, labour law, and land law. Noteworthy was his role as council for the Zondo Commission, showcasing legal acumen and dedication to truth and justice. He served on the legal team that argued a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In addition to several academic articles, Ngcukaitobi has written two well-received books about land law and land reform in South Africa. The Land Is Ours: South Africa’s First Black Lawyers and the Birth of Constitutionalism (2018) and Land Matters: South Africa’s Failed Reforms and the Road Ahead (2021)delve into the complex issues of land dispossession, reform, and ownership in South Africa.
