25 Years of Democracy Conference

23 July 2019

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in partnership with the Presidency  hosted of the 25 Years of Democracy Conference from 23 to 24 July 2019. The conference aims to facilitate reflective national discourse through research and social dialogue on the nation’s evolving democratisation process.

The multi-stakeholder conference offered South Africans a platform to engage and share varied experiences in a post-apartheid democracy for democratic consolidation and rebuilding participatory citizenship.

The conference was guided by four central questions:

  1. What lessons for governance, socio-economic transformation and nation building can we learn from our recent past?
  2. What are some critical success factors and challenges for realising the democratic promise?
  3. What will be the key drivers of change in the next 25 years of our democracy?
  4. Where will South Africa be in another 25 years?

The conference convened over two days using a range of interactive formats to facilitate both high level research and deep dives into policy and lived realities.

The expected outcomes of the two days will include a report on conference proceedings and input into the Presidential Macrosocial Report that will be launched later in the year.
