Over a two-week period, Syria experienced a series of dramatic events as opposition fighters from several groups captured one town after another in the culmination of the uprising that began in 2011. The rapidity of the rebel advance, the surrender of soldiers of the Syrian army and the diplomatic deals made even before Damascus was captured shocked observers. In 14 years, close to a million people were killed and about 12 million displaced in the Syrian civil war.
