Traditional Leaders in a Democracy: Resources, Respect and Resistance

28 February 2019

NIHSS, 24 St Andrews Rd, Parktown, Johannesburg

9:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) in partnership with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) is pleased to invite you to the launch of MISTRA’s latest publication – an edited volume titled, Traditional Leaders in a Democracy: Resources, Respect and Resistance.

This book is a product of an intensive research project that sought to explore how chieftaincy is practiced, experienced and contested in contemporary South Africa. It explores how those living under the authority of chiefs, in a modern democracy, negotiate these politics in their respective areas. The chapters in the book are organised around three major sites of contest in the area of traditional leadership: leadership, land and law.
