The research was undertaken by MISTRA in partnership with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and Pan-African Investment & Research Services (PAIRS) in consultation with PGM value chain stakeholders. It aims to determine the feasibility of establishing a PGM Exchange in South Africa.

This adds to MISTRA’s in-depth research on the political economy of mining, including the books, South Africa and the Global Hydrogen Economy: the Strategic Role of Platinum Group Metals and The Future of Mining in South Africa: Sunset or Sunrise published in 2013 and 2018, respectively.

MISTRA’s Annual PGM Roundtable brings together different stakeholders in the PGM value chain to collectively take stock of dynamics in the industry. Critically, it seeks to address market coordination failures and ensure joint and varied actions to take full advantage of an endowment that South Africa has in abundance.
