Roundtable

Arithmetic of Savings

28 October 2011

Pembi Conference Centre, Mount Lebanon Road, Johannesburg

2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

MISTRA’s research on South Africa savings behaviour to understand current and historic economic horizons in both South African households and the financial industry, entitled, The Arithmetic of Savings was discussed at a roundtable in October, 2011 in Woodmead, Johannesburg.

The roundtable was convened to offer interim insights by the research team which is being led by Professor Nicola Viegi and seek critical inputs from participants. Areas under discussion were:

  • Access to credit and where the lines are drawn in South Africa;
  • international financial integration and national investment – the role of financial markets in producing a savings imbalance; and
  • the relationship between the design of South Africa’s social security system and household consumption and savings.

The workshop will offer a space to the research team to report on its work thus far and to seek critical inputs from participants.
