5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) is pleased to invite you to the launch of its latest publication, Africa and the World: Navigating shifting geopolitics on Monday, 3rd February 2020.
The edited volume analyses the shifting global landscape from the point of view of challenges and opportunities facing the African continent. Africa’s geographical location means it can be considered a mega-island, located in the south between east and west. The authors in the study seek to contribute to discourse on geopolitics from a perspective that is currently lacking – that is, locating ‘Island Africa’ as a strategic centre in terms of its geographic location, its endowments and its long-term potential.
The authors assert that the African continent’s positioning presents unique political, security and geo-economic benefits. Yet they also acknowledge that, as has happened historically, these very advantages can serve as a basis for new forms of domination and exploitation.
The publication explores economic interests, global military strategies, demographics, migration and environmental challenges. In addition, it addresses the psychological factors that influence how nations of the world receive and interpret the present and assess prospects for the future.
MISTRA would greatly value your contribution to a discussion about how to centre Africa’s agency in the evolving global order.
We thank you in anticipation for your attendance.
