Are We All Africans?

Redefining African identity in a post-colonial era

What does it mean to be African in the 21st century?

Thirty years after President Thabo Mbeki’s seminal ‘I am an African’ speech, issues of African identity, citizenship and pan-Africanism remain as urgent as ever. MISTRA, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg, invites you to the 15th Mapungubwe Annual Lecture, which will address these issues. The Lecture comes at a time of rising populism and fierce debates around migration and the future of the continent. It will explore what it means to be a ‘New African’ – grounded in consciousness, political agency and a commitment to Africa’s advancement.
