South Africa in an Age of Disasters: Managing Risk and Building Competence

Edited by Zamanzima Mazibuko-Makena and Rasigan Maharajh

Published 31 March 2026

South Africa has faced a series of disasters, including a pandemic, floods and fires. Globally, we seem to be living in an age of natural hazards and human-made disasters, often occurring concurrently.

This book surveys some of these recent disasters and also looks back at epoch-making disasters in human history to identify lessons for South Africa. What does history, including recent history,  teach us about disaster management, and how can we best implement those lessons? Contributors explore how South Africa can best address the age of Polycrisis.
