This volume is a commemorative issue that consolidates research undertaken by the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) on various aspects of women’s place and role in South Africa’s political economy and polity at large. The volume is based on chapters from MISTRA’s publications as well as seminal contributions, on MISTRA platforms, to critical global debates.
The chapters constitute a curated sample, illustrative of the central issues that have confronted women as they navigate societal structures, power dynamics and norms. These include race, class and gender inequality which were defining features of colonial and apartheid rule, the legacy of which persists well into the democratic dispensation.
