Sometimes the young may be the ones to start charting a new way. On August 3 all “eligible and registered” South African voters will be able to take part in the 5th municipal elections and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be looking to see how many younger people take part in this democratic process.

The concern, for the IEC and others, is and has been low youth participation numbers. A statistic thrown around to encourage young people to register to vote is that more than 80 percent of “young people” are not on the voters roll.

Does this mean the youth are politically apathetic?
