The State of the South African State – Capability, Capacity and Ethics
27 February 2025
The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) hosted a webinar panel discussion on the state of the South African state 30 years into democracy.
Building on MISTRA’s previous research examining the complex challenges, successes and failures of the South African state, MISTRA has undertaken a project that provides a comprehensive and timely evaluation of the South African state, with recommendations for course correction.
This webinar was a precursor to MISTRA’s upcoming publication on the South African state. While exploring different conceptual and theoretical lenses relevant to an understanding of the South African state, it also assessed the state’s capability, capacity, ethics and effectiveness.
The webinar speakers discussed the challenges the South African state continues to face, and the requirements for it to effectively address its developmental and other challenges, and assessed whether the contemporary state, led by the GNU, is up to the task.
The webinar was conducted via Zoom and moderated by MISTRA Director of Research, Dr Sandy Africa.
