MISTRA hosted an imbizo on Arts and National Development on the 10th – 11th April 2019 in partnership with the NIHSS. The imbizo took place under the theme: “Rethinking the Positioning of the Arts in South Africa”. The event began with a reading of a paper prepared by Prof Mongane Wally Serote on ‘The need to move the arts and culture from the periphery to the centre of South Africa’s national struggle and discourse to achieve non-racialism, non-sexism, democracy and prosperity.’

The goal of the event was to gather industry practitioners, policymakers and artists to take stock of the Arts in the context of the past, the present and the future.
