Statement on the passing of Prof Jakes Gerwel
The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) joins South Africa in expressing its condolences on the passing of Prof Jakes Gerwel. A distinguished academic and intellectual, Prof Gerwel’s role in the struggle against apartheid colonialism and in our country’s transition to democracy is undisputed
Prof Jakes Gerwel was an accomplished public servant, a great intellectual and a wise counsellor. MISTRA is proud to have had Prof Gerwel as a member of our Council of Advisors on which he served as a Vice-Chairperson. We have gained enormously from his contribution. MISTRA is particularly sad to have lost a great thinker, on the eve of the realisation of an organisational milestone: the public launch of one of our 8 inaugural research projects, The Art, Philosophy and Science of football in South Africa.
South Africa has lost a son who has contributed unconditionally to the achievement of democracy in our country, and who has played a pivotal role in the post-1994 political transition.
Our country, and our Institute, will be the poorer without his incisive intellect and distinguished leadership.
May he rest in peace. Lala ngoxolo.
