South Africa’s already struggling municipalities are facing a “polycrisis” as climate change amplifies existing governance failures, leaving them without the dynamic capabilities needed to respond to disasters while disproportionately harming the country’s most vulnerable communities, writes Zamanzima Mazibuko-Makena.

It is no secret that local municipalities in South Africa have been plagued by years of incompetent leadership, maladministration, poor infrastructure maintenance, poor resource allocation, and failure to meet their basic governance and service delivery responsibilities.
