MISTRA Fellows

The MISTRA Fellowship system has been established to bring experts in a variety of fields as researchers on specific themes or high-level partners in the content work of MISTRA. Such experts are designated as Fellow of the Mapungubwe Institute (FMI).

Fellows work with/at MISTRA as and when the need arises for a fixed duration of two years subject to renewal.

They are appointed based on the following criteria:

  • preference is accorded to South Africans, however citizenship is not a criterion for selection
  • previous engagement in research aimed at producing new knowledge in various fields of human development, in the social and natural sciences
  • qualification at the level of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • ‘social wisdom’ including, life experiences with the potential to add intellectual value in various fields of human endeavour
  • scholarship contributing to the process of knowledge development and dissemination, including publication
  • outstanding contribution in fields of work aligned to MISTRA’s mission and vision.

The process for appointment of  MISTRA Fellows for the period 2019 – 2021 is currently underway.
